Leaking Hot Water Tank
Water pooling under the unit or dripping from the base.
Internal cylinder corrosion — once the glass lining cracks, the steel tank rusts through from the inside out. Common in units over 8–10 years old, especially where the sacrificial anode was never replaced.
If the tank itself is breached, replacement is the only permanent fix — patching a rusted cylinder is temporary at best. We assess whether a repair (valve, fitting, or seal) will hold or whether a new unit is the smarter spend, and give you a fixed quote for both.
No Hot Water at All
Tap runs cold, unit silent, no reset tripping.
On electric units: blown element, failed thermostat, or a tripped high-limit cut-out. On gas units: failed pilot, thermocouple, or gas control valve. On continuous flow: ignition board or flame sensor fault.
We carry elements, thermostats, thermocouples and gas control valves for the common Coast brands in the van. Most no-hot-water call-outs are repaired same-day on the first visit — we diagnose, quote a fixed price, and fit the part.
Water Not Hot Enough / Runs Out Fast
Lukewarm water, or it runs cold after a few minutes.
Usually a failed lower element on a twin-element electric tank (the top element keeps the top third warm but the bulk stays cold), a thermostat stuck open, or heavy sediment build-up insulating the element from the water.
We test both elements and thermostats with a multimeter, flush the sediment, and replace only what's failed. If the tank is heavily scaled, we'll quote a flush-and-anode service to restore capacity before recommending replacement.
Relief Valve Leaking / Discharging
Water running from the overflow pipe, often when the unit heats up.
Temperature & Pressure Relief (TPR) valve doing its job — but constantly discharging means either the thermostat is overheating the water, the valve is worn, or mains pressure has crept above the valve's set point.
We replace the TPR valve (a cheap, code-required part that should be replaced every 4 years anyway), check the thermostat set-point, and if pressure is high, fit or service a pressure-limiting valve to protect the whole system.
Strange Noises — Rumbling, Banging, Hissing
Tank groans, bangs, or hisses when heating.
Sediment and mineral scale trapped at the bottom of the tank traps water beneath it; it boils, expands, and pops. Hissing can indicate a slow leak or a gas burner issue. Left alone, scale shortens element life and risks tank failure.
A full tank drain and flush removes the scale, quietens the unit, and restores heating efficiency. If the element is already damaged we replace it; if the tank is too far gone, we'll tell you straight and quote a replacement.

How much does a new hot water system cost on the Central Coast?
It depends entirely on the system. As a rough guide: an electric storage unit fully installed runs from around $1,000–$1,800; gas storage $1,400–$2,200; continuous flow $1,500–$2,500; heat pump $2,800–$4,500; and solar $3,500–$6,000+ before rebates. How long do hot water systems last on the Central Coast?
Most storage tanks last 8–12 years; continuous flow units 15–20 years; solar and heat pumps 12–15+ years. Coastal air and hard water both shorten tank life — which is why annual flushing and anode replacement matter so much here. If your unit is over 10 years old and giving trouble, replacement is almost always better value than a major repair.
Which hot water system is cheapest to run?
Solar and heat pumps have the lowest running cost (often a quarter of an electric storage unit's), followed by gas storage and continuous flow, with electric storage the most expensive to run. Do you offer same-day hot water replacement?
Yes, in most cases. We carry the most common Rheem, Rinnai and Dux electric and gas units on the van or have same-day access to them from our Central Coast suppliers. If your tank has burst or you've got no hot water, call before midday and we'll usually have you back in hot water the same day.
Are you licensed to install gas and solar hot water systems?
Absolutely. We hold a NSW Contractor Licence (#360180C) covering both plumbing and gas fitting work, plus the specialised endorsements for solar and heat pump installation. Every install is done to Australian Standards, with a compliance certificate supplied and full manufacturer warranty plus our lifetime labour guarantee.
What rebates are available for hot water on the Central Coast?
Solar and heat pump systems are eligible for Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), which effectively reduce the upfront price. The exact value depends on the system and your location zone. We calculate the STC value for you and apply it to the quote, and we can also advise on any NSW energy efficiency schemes that may apply at the time.
My hot water tank is leaking — what should I do right now?
First, turn off the power (electric) or gas supply to the unit at the switchboard or isolating tap. Then turn off the cold water supply valve to the unit (usually a lever valve on the inlet pipe). Open a hot tap to relieve pressure, mop up any water, and call us on 02 4308 6775. A leaking tank usually means the cylinder has corroded through and the unit will need replacing — we'll confirm on arrival and quote a fixed replacement price.
Can you service a hot water system still under warranty?
Yes. We can diagnose and repair units under manufacturer warranty, and we'll always tell you upfront if a fault is likely covered so you can claim through the brand first. For out-of-warranty units, our fixed pricing and lifetime labour guarantee usually make repair or replacement through us the simpler path.
